Say Hi
I want to hear about your explorations too!

Snapshots of Marrakech. One last post on this place for now!
The city feels ALIVE.
It has endless wandering passageways, some with tons of activity, some with just a hint of more around the corner. It was tricky to capture the busyness of this place (especially when trying to be respectful to not take photos of people). Maybe that’s why the moments of calm and the places that facilitate them are so dramatic.
📸1️⃣: Dar el Bacha
📸2️⃣: Private riad paradise
📸3️⃣: Jardin Majorelle (recommend going in the morning because it gets very crowded!)
📸4️⃣: Vignette of life next to a storefront along a busy pathway
📸5️⃣: Typical passageway hinting at more to explore
📸6️⃣: Casual rooftop lunch at Café Snack Chez Maazouz

Let’s talk about shopping in Marrakech!
If you’ve seen my recent reels and stories, you know the Marrakech home decor game is off the charts. (Btw I intentionally packed only 3 tops and 3 bottoms for this 2 week trip because I wanted to leave as much space in my luggage for goods here!)
Nearly everything is an opportunity to haggle. If that excites you, you’re in luck because you’ll be haggling everything starting with the taxi that suspiciously doesn’t have a meter (this is illegal but happens) all the way through your very last purchase of the trip.
The only times we didn’t haggle were museum entries, pre-booked lodging, argan oil from a pharmacy that adheres to government regulations, and food (though there were some places with no menu where I feel we were overcharged, but didn’t know enough to navigate).
✨ Tips:
1. A good rule of thumb is to offer 30% of the price and then plan to settle at 50%. Admittedly most of the time I felt too awkward to go that low to start, but I got more comfortable with it in the later part of the trip. I love a good deal but also keep in mind that right now 10 Moroccan Dirhams = ~$1 USD so keep in mind what you’re haggling for. Depending on the situation, whatever you’re trying to save may mean more to the shopkeeper than you.
2. Always be kind.
3. I saw a tip about not asking for the price of something unless you’re really interested in buying. But sometimes you don’t know what your price is yet! My advice is to be respectful and conscious of the time you and shopkeeper are investing. If there’s a good chance you’re not going to buy, walk away before they pull out 27 rugs for you to look at. You can always come back.

I love staying in places that are thoughtfully curated and designed with experience in mind.
We lucked out with this private riad @dar_maloukti with a direct (as direct as you can get in the medina) pathway to Jemaa el Fna Square, the main square of Marrakech.
The surrounding neighborhood is so lively, filled with local life! It was pure magic to start the day here with breakfast and mint tea, and then to later retreat into this oasis at the end of the day.
✨Travel tip: Book with a riad (hotel, Airbnb, etc) that knows their stuff and can hook you up with private transfers, tour guides that don’t scam you, and restaurant recommendations. This private riad has a top-notch host that really cares for this home and this city!

As the sun sets on 2022, we’ve got all the appreciation for this one from the rooftop of Café des Épices, in the middle of the Marrakech Medina.
Mint tea, harira soup, sizzling berber style eggs. Buzzing market below. Glow of the sun coloring the Atlas Mountains in the distance.

It’s been an epic year for traveling!
Traveled to and with friends and family, traveled to celebrate momentous life occasions in our peoples’ lives - marriages, moving, birth, and traveled for general merriment!
Far too many highlights of the year to put in this reel and tbh I got super lazy about it so here are just a few.
127 nights away from home.
6 camping trips.
1 month-long van trip.
6 countries - Turkey (Istanbul, Cappadocia), Germany (Münich, Nuremberg) Italy (Rome, Positano, Naples), Morocco (Marrakech), UK (Cambridge, London), USA (LA, Boston, Breckenridge, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Santa Fe, Taos, Estes Park, Boulder, Lawrence, Kansas City, Missoula, Seattle, Dallas, NYC, California Central Coast)
Made a lot of sweet memories in 2022, now ready to see what 2023 has to offer! We do have some epic trips planned, but I’m equally looking forward to more days at home, less trip planning, and more room for spontaneity, stillness, and creativity.
Happy new year, everyone! Hope it feels good to close the chapter on 2022 and turn our attention to 2023, whatever that means for you.

Staying in a riad in Marrakech is a must! The serenity of the inner courtyard is a refreshing escape from the hustle of the Medina, the old town in Marrakech.
After navigating the true maze that is the Medina pathways, we found ourselves in awe and at peace in the first riad we stayed in @riadorientalgloryandspa
✨ Travel tip: If your riad offers a private transfer, take it! We were scammed and threatened by a fake (and illegal!) guide on our way in. Learn from us 🫠

Bonus of traveling in the low season? No crowds!
What a trip to be able to actually walk through Pompeii and catch glimpses of what life must have been like in this city back in it’s day.
✨Visiting tips:
1. Audio guide was super handy. The device they provide shows you your location at any given time so you won’t get lost (even though tour guides try to convince you otherwise).
2. Tour guides outside of the Pompeii gates are not official and will try and overcharge you.
3. If you’re really trying to take your time and learn, set aside a few hours. There’s a lot to see!
4. Wear sunscreen 😎

To everyone who celebrates it, merry Christmas! To everyone else, merry December 25th!
Continuing my obsession with the ocean and the sea… To me they represent the big and small factors that determined our existence, and what we choose to do with it everyday ripples into the future, becoming big and small factors for other people.
Consider this existential musing captioned on a beautiful video of the Amalfi Coast my holiday gift 😂

Californians are spoiled with beautiful coastal views, but gotta give it to Positano.
May we never tire of coastal sunsets and all that they represent - gratitude, wonder, and hope of a new day beyond.
📍Book yourself a stay with @petrealifestylesuites. Truly one of the best places we’ve ever experienced.

Rome wasn’t built in a day and it can’t be seen in one either!
Luckily we have a few days. Here’s some of what we’ve been up to so far on our first visit to Rome…
1️⃣ Colosseum. Obviously this is a must-see. It’s a World Wonder! We did a night tour, which is less crowded than the visiting during the day. Also adds to the eeriness of being in a place that has seen so much darkness.
2️⃣ Roman Forum + Palatine. This historically significant site is located in the center of ancient Rome (and looks like the coolest architectural salvage yard you’ve ever seen, with sick views).
3️⃣ Pasta break - 3 in this reel but many many more IRL!
4️⃣ Pantheon. Over 2000 years old, well-preserved, and incredible to experience. It’s free to enter so you can revisit multiple times to see how the light comes through over the day!
5️⃣ Trevi Fountain. Notorious for having hordes of people around it at all times. We didn’t get to have a private moment there but it was still worth seeing this large travertine sculpture that gets a million or so euros tossed in and subsequently donated each year!
